As of March 2000, Sunburst Hospitality Corporation has teamed up with Project Planet and is requiring their hotels to participate in the Project Planet/Childreach aspect of the Project Planet program. This aspect of the Project Planet initiative incorporates the linens and towels reuse program combined with the sponsorship of a needy child. A portion of the profits gained from the linens and towels reuse program goes to support that child. The Silver Spring, Maryland corporation is the largest management and owning company of Choice brand Hotels.
Former Good Earthkeeping users are flocking to the Project Planet environmental initiative. Good Earthkeeping, the linens and towels reuse program produced by the American Hotel and Lodging Association, was replaced by Project Planet in November, 1999. Since the beginning of 2000, former Good Earthkeeping users have experienced wonderful results with Project Planet. One Sheraton hotel in North Carolina went from an 11% participation rate to over 80% participation with Project Planet!
